Bored, Hungry Boys... NOT!

Christopher and Joshua both have Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off school. How on earth are they going to fill their time?!? Wednesday: Miss Lewellyn (AKA Jennifer) takes them to the playground at the GDQ with Jonathan (6) and Luke (5) Ogburn. Poor boys. They have to spend time with their friends AND play at the playground. (Besides the fact that Jennifer took it on herself to entertain them with treasure hunts and organized games and etc!) Joshua says it was the most fun he's had all year! Thursday: Poor boys again have to spend time with friends -- Mrs Doci (AKA Nicky) offers to take the boys to play with Aaron (6) and Abbie (5). Needless to say, the boys are crushed to have to go see friends again. Friday: Aunt Carolyn (Eshelman) offers to take the boys to play with Aubrey (6) and Katie (8). Imagine the suffering! Then to top it off they are going on a sleepover with Jonathan & Luke in the evening (sans Jonathan Bowers this time). What a boring week... At this rate the boys aren't going to want their mommy to come home!!! :-) (Obviously that's not the case.) But then you have to think thru how difficult it is for the 4 men in our household to limp along on Daddy's cooking, right? WRONG! We've had to start asking people to hold off on bringing food because all the left-overs are going to go bad! Laura G, Judy P, Julee S, Cindy W, Ann B, Susanna D, Carolyn E, the list goes on and on. And we keep having people call and say, "What can I do to help -- really, really, DO call me and let me know." WHAT A GREAT COMMUNITY WE LIVE IN! "They will know you are Christians by your love..." THANK YOU!!! [By the way, if you ever thought you could never work overseas because it's so difficult living so far from friends and family and in such a strange and unfriendly place... YOU REALLY OUGHT TO COME AND CHECK OUT ALBANIA! What a wonderful group of people surround us as we raise our family here...]

Protecting What Is Valuable To Us

I've always had this thing for nautical-themed decorations: old fashioned ships wheels, compasses, ship models, pictures with ships and lighthouses - it just feels like "me." Most of my life I've been prancing around the globe and so, necessarily, these decorations have been left in attics and storage boxes and often sent to thrift stores or (sniff) the dump, but I really do enjoy collecting these things and decorating my "man cave" with them. (a similar crystal ship, but not as intricate) I remember one year for a birthday in my 20s my parents brought me a beautiful crystalline ship, crafted in exquisite detail despite its tiny size. They traveled for my birthday and brought it from Pennsylvania to South Carolina (about 12 hours in the car) in a very carefully packed box. I WILL NOT BE CHEATED! I WILL NOT BE MADE A FOOL OF! I WILL NOT BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF! I WILL NOT LET ANYONE TAKE WHAT IS MINE! (including my rights!) A peak into the soul of a controlling man... A recipe for bitterness and a brittle heart... I wasn't always this way. I remember as a teenager working on a repair job with my uncle. He stepped off the ladder next to where I was working on the floor and stepped squarely on my fingers with his workboots. It hurt! But my response was reflexive - I apologized for getting in his way and almost making him fall... The other people in the room laughed at me (who apologizes when it is their fingers that got stepped on?!) but it seemed quite natural to me... I remember maybe the day (?) when this attitude took root in my heart. I was in seminary but visiting at a relative's home.
